The Consultation Process
The consultation starts with a telephone call or email. We will discuss your needs, concerns, and scope of the consultation.
Next we would schedule a time for me to come and do an evaluation. At this time I would give you an estimate of the cost of my services for your particular project. During the evaluation I would assess the elements of the space including furniture, fabric colors, lighting, and other relevant aspects of the room. If the space is an office or other commercial space I would gather as much information about the function of particular areas, clientele and employee considerations, the image and mood that is to be projected, visual ergonomics of the space, etc. I would take digital photographs of the space to help me later on and to use for color mapping. I would then discuss with you any ideas you may have, what you like and dislike, concerns, and especially the function of the rooms and what your would like to achieve with the spaces.
Next I will go back to my office and get to work. I try to limit my initial color ideas to 2 or 3 choices for each area. More than that can be unnecessarily confusing. I then prepare 18 by 24 inch sample boards with each color. I also digitally add colors to the photographs I have taken to allow you visualize how different colors would look in the spaces under consideration.
Then I will schedule another visit to test the samples. We will go through each of the color samples to see how they work within the room. During this visit we will try and narrow the choices down to just a few. I ask my clients to take a couple of days before making a final decision. I recommend that they place the samples throughout the room, moving them a few times. It is important to view the samples in different light ( morning, afternoon and evening). It is also beneficial to see the colors next to furniture, in corners, and the middle of the wall. In other words see how the colors look throughout the room.
Once you have selected a few colors that you are satisfied with I will discuss how the colors will interact with the elements in the room and how they will harmonize with adjacent areas. For larger scales projects I will draw up a color map indicating which surfaces will receive which colors.
Then I will give you the names, numbers, and sheen for each of the chosen colors. For larger projects I would produce a color map that indicates exactly where each color would go. From there you can either use these to try out the colors on the walls or give the information to your painter.
Before you are ready to do the final painting you may contact me to come over to do any last minute adjustments or to assess the choices one last time.
The CERA Approach
I offer this added service for those who want to explore their own personal responses to color. Although it is optional, clients have found it very helpful when creating a particular mood in a room.
The consultation process would be the same as with the traditional consultation. The difference is that it would begin with a color emotional response analysis. The results would help determine what family of colors it might best to avoid in a particular room and which ones may provide an added emotional flavor or mood to a room based on your personal responses to various colors.
To learn more about this aspect of color consultation that I have developed go to the CERA page of this web site. There you will find not only an explanation of CERA and how the consultation is done but also a wealth of related information on color theory and the emotion connection we all have with color.
